OBA III: CO-OP
Art, Identity and Urban Revitalization

OBA III: CO-OP was conceived as a social sculpture and performance–think-tank within the broader OBA III body of work, taking place at Rothko Chapel, Housston, Texas in 2013.
Developed in collaboration with FACE USA / FACE Foundation, the French Consulate General of Houston, Texan-French Alliance for the Arts (TFAA), and Quancard Contemporary Art, the work convened artists, civic leaders, and cultural organizers in a roundtable format focused on dialogue and collective visioning.
Invited by Monte Laster, ninety-eight leaders from culturally diverse and socially engaged organizations across Houston—many meeting for the first time—gathered to bridge parallel spheres of community work. The convening created an intentional space for intercultural exchange, aligning with the Chapel’s mission to integrate artistic expression, spirituality, and creative activism in support of equitable and engaged communities.
Guided by principles of access, compassion, dialogue, and justice, OBA III: CO-OP explored the intersection of contemporary art and cultural identity as a catalyst for urban revitalization in French and American contexts. The work culminated in a video installation and photographic series documenting the encounters and emerging networks.
Conceived as a replicable model, the initiative was later activated at "BIB" at the Palais de Tokyo in 2014 and through "Valorem", in collaboration with the Société du Grand Paris in 2017, extending its methodology into the sphere of large-scale urban development.
Created by Monte Laster and curated by Muriel Quancard, OBA advances art as a platform for social inquiry and collaborative renewal across diverse urban landscapes.

OBA III : CO-OP a été conçu comme une sculpture sociale et un think-tank performatif au sein du corpus plus large d’OBA III, ayant eu lieu à la Rothko Chapel en 2013.
Développé en collaboration avec FACE USA / FACE Foundation, le Consulat général de France à Houston, Texan-French Alliance for the Arts (TFAA) et Quancard Contemporary Art, cette œuvre a réuni des artistes, des leaders civiques et des organisateurs culturels autour d’une table ronde centrée sur le dialogue et la co-construction de visions collectives.
Invités par Monte Laster, quatre-vingt-dix-huit dirigeants issus d’organisations culturellement diverses et socialement engagées à Houston—dont beaucoup se rencontraient pour la première fois—se sont rassemblés pour créer des passerelles entre des sphères parallèles de travail communautaire. Cette rencontre a offert un espace intentionnel d’échanges interculturels, en accord avec la mission de la Chapelle qui vise à intégrer expression artistique, spiritualité et activisme créatif pour soutenir des communautés équitables et impliquées.
Guidé par des principes d’accès, de compassion, de dialogue et de justice, OBA III : CO-OP a exploré l’intersection entre l’art contemporain et l’identité culturelle comme catalyseur de revitalisation urbaine dans les contextes français et américain. L’œuvre s’est concrétisée par une installation vidéo et une série photographique documentant les rencontres et les réseaux émergents.
Conçu comme un modèle reproductible, le projet a ensuite été activé lors de BIB au Palais de Tokyo en 2014 et à travers Valorem, en collaboration avec la Société du Grand Paris en 2017, étendant sa méthodologie au domaine du développement urbain à grande échelle.
Créé par Monte Laster et curaté par Muriel Quancard, OBA promeut l’art comme plateforme d’enquête sociale et de renouvellement collaboratif à travers des paysages urbains diversifiés.
