Art, Interculturality and Urban Revitalization

Following OBA (Our Better Angels) I in New York and OBA II in Paris and La Courneuve, OBA III took shape as the CO-OP project. This social sculpture and performative think tank was created by Monte Laster in 2013 at the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas.
The project was developed in collaboration with FACE USA, the Consulate General of France in Houston, TFAA, and Quancard Contemporary Art. It brought together stakeholders, community representatives, associations, and institutions in Houston to explore interculturality rather than multiculturalism, focusing on the intersections between cultures in everyday life and their contemporary challenges. Presented as a furniture installation conducive to open exchange, the installation featured a meditation cushion in the center of the chapel. Many participants were meeting for the first time, building new bridges between communities. A roundtable discussion facilitated the collective development of visions around intercultural dialogue and exchange. The project combined art, spirituality, activism, and social engagement, collectively questioning the role of contemporary art in cultural identity and urban revitalization. By creating a space for symbolic and human exchange, the work took the form of a video installation and a photographic series documenting these encounters and giving voice to what transpired in these different locations. Its methodology was subsequently adopted at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2014 and then with the Société du Grand Paris in 2017. OBA thus affirms art as a tool for social inquiry, dialogue, and collective transformation.

À la suite de OBA (Our Better Angels) I à New York et OBA II à Paris et la Courneuve. OBA III prend forme sous le projet CO-OP. Celle-ci est une sculpture sociale et un think-tank performatif créé par Monte Laster en 2013 à la Rothko Chapel à Houston, Texas.
Le projet a été développé avec FACE USA, le Consulat général de France à Houston, TFAA et Quancard Contemporary Art. Il a réuni des acteurs, représentants de communautés, associations et institutions de Houston autour de l’interculturalité au lieu de la multiculturalité aux croisements entre les cultures dans les vies et leurs enjeux contemporains. Présenté sous forme d’installation de mobilier propice à l’échange sans bannières où l’on retrouve au milieu de la chapelle un coussin de méditation. Beaucoup se rencontraient pour la première fois, créant de nouvelles passerelles entre communautés. Une table ronde a permis de construire collectivement des visions autour du dialogue et de l’échange interculturel. Le projet associait art, spiritualité, activisme et engagement social qui questionnent ensemble le rôle de l’art contemporain dans l’identité culturelle et la revitalisation urbaine. En déployant un lieu d’échange symbolique et humain, l’œuvre a pris la forme d’une installation vidéo et d’une série photographique documentant ces rencontres pour faire exister ce qui s’est passé à ces différents endroits. Sa méthodologie a ensuite été reprise au Palais de Tokyo à Paris en 2014 puis avec la Société du Grand Paris en 2017. OBA affirme ainsi l’art comme un outil d’enquête sociale, de dialogue et de transmutation collective.
